Two horizontal marks. It has meant 'two' since the oracle-bone script — the oldest way of writing the quantity.
Before a measure word, 二 becomes 两 (liǎng). Two books = 两本书, not 二本书. But for phone numbers and maths you use 二.
我有二个苹果。
Wǒ yǒu èr ge píngguǒ.
I have two apples.
