Character origin

Radical 人 + 云 (to say). It originally meant 'a gathering' (people coming together to talk). From there it came to mean 'to know how' (what you learn at gatherings).

Did you know?

It contrasts with 能 (physical ability) and 可以 (permission). '我会说中文' means I can speak Chinese because I've learned it, not because I'm physically able to.
