Radical 冖 (cover) + 与 (to give). To write is to 'give while covering' — to trace the characters.

Did you know?

The traditional character is 寫, with the 'bird' element (隹). Simplification reduced it to 写. Handwriting (手写, shǒuxiě) is still very important, and calligraphy is an art in China.
