A pictograph of a nose (in the old script). Through sound change it ended up being used for the number four.
Four is avoided because it sounds like 'death' (sǐ). Many buildings have no fourth floor, no room four. In lifts, the 4 buttons are often skipped or replaced with 3A, 3B, etc.
