Radical 乛 + 曰 (to say). The traditional 書 showed a hand holding a brush over something written. Simplification reduced it to this stroke.
Books in ancient China were bamboo scrolls or silk strips. The invention of paper was a milestone. Today 书 means 'book', but it can also mean 'writing' or 'calligraphy'.
