Character origin

Radical 火 (fire) + 占 (to divine). A tiny flame (a dot of fire) glowing in the dark — hence 'dot'. It later came to mark o'clock on the clock.

Did you know?

To ask the time you say '几点?' ('how many dots?'). Minutes use 分 (fēn). '三点二十分' = 3:20.
