号
hào
number; day of the month
Type: NounsHSK 1
Radical 口 (mouth) + 丂 (phonetic). It originally meant a shout or a call. It then came to mean 'number' (a call to order) and 'day of the month'.
A phone number is 号码 (hàomǎ). To ask 'how many children do you have?' you don't use 号 but 个. 号 is for ordinal numbers (first, second) and for the date.
