名 (given name) + 字 (character). In ancient China people had a given name (名) and a social name (字). Today 名字 simply means 'full name' (surname + given name).
Chinese surnames come first. The most common are Li (李), Wang (王), Zhang (张), Liu (刘). When introducing yourself you say the surname then the given name: '我叫王小明' (My name is Wang Xiaoming).
