Radical 土 (earth) + 鬼 (ghost, phonetic). It originally meant a 'clod' of earth. From there it became 'piece' and then the colloquial unit of money.
Colloquially, 一块钱 is 'one yuan'. The yuan is the official currency, but on the street everyone says 块. It's also the measure word for flat objects or pieces: 一块蛋糕 (a piece of cake).
