Radical 山 (mountain) + 夕 (evening). It originally referred to the planet Jupiter (the 'year star'). It came to be used for counting age.
To ask small children's ages: '几岁' (jǐ suì). For the elderly: '多大年纪' (duō dà niánjì) or simply '多少岁'. In China the first year of life counts from conception, so newborns are already 1 year old in the traditional system.
