汉 (the Han dynasty) + 语 (language). The language of the Han people, who make up over 90% of Chinese.

Did you know?

Colloquially 中文 (zhōngwén) is more common. 汉语 refers to the spoken language; 中文 includes the writing. Standard Mandarin is based on the Beijing dialect, but there are many others (Cantonese, Shanghainese).
