读
dú
to read; to study
Type: VerbsHSK 1
Radical 讠 (speech) + 卖 (to sell). It originally meant reading aloud — as if you 'sold' the words by voicing them.
读书 (dú shū) doesn't just mean 'to read a book' but 'to study' in general. When someone says '我去读书' it can mean they're off to study, not merely to read.
