Character origin

Radical 阝 (city) + 者 (person). It originally meant 'capital', where the most important person lives. By extension it came to mean 'all' (what takes in the whole city).

Did you know?

When it means 'all' it goes after the subject: '我们都' (all of us), always before the verb. With 每 (every) it reinforces: '每个人都说' (everyone says).
