A pictograph of a flower without petals, or a bird that cannot fly. It stands for negation — what is missing or denied.
One of the most-used words in Chinese. Before another fourth tone it shifts to second tone (bú), as in 不是 (bú shì). That tone change is mandatory.
我不是学生。
Wǒ bú shì xuésheng.
I am not a student.
