Type: VerbsHSK 1
Radical 手 (hand) + 目 (eye). Putting a hand over the eyes to look into the distance, shading them from the sun.
Watching TV is 看电视, watching a film is 看电影. 看见 (kànjiàn) is 'to see' as a result. Note the difference: 看 is the act of looking; 看见 is succeeding in seeing.
