高 (tall) + 兴 (to rise, to be roused). Having one's spirits raised — being happy. A visual metaphor for joy.

Did you know?

It's the positive emotion taught most in HSK1 courses. To say 'nice to meet you' you say 很高兴认识你 (hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ).

Example sentence

我今天很高兴。

Wǒ jīntiān hěn gāoxìng.

I am very happy today.
