Radical 女 (woman) + 也 (phonetic). Coined in the 20th century to mark the feminine gender in writing, influenced by Western languages.
It was the poet and linguist Liu Bannong who proposed the character in the 1920s. Before that, 他 was used for both genders. The innovation caught on and is now standard.
