Type: NounsHSK 1
Radical 田 (field) + 土 (earth). What lies within the field: the village, the inside. Hence 'inside'.
It's also a unit of distance (500 metres). In the old days distances were measured in 里. The Great Wall is about 21,196 km long (roughly 42,000 里).
