hěn

very; quite

Type: AdverbsHSK 1
Character origin

Radical 彳 (small step) + 艮 (hard, stubborn). It originally meant 'violent, stubborn'. Over time it softened into a mild degree adverb.

Did you know?

It's often translated as 'very', but in a sentence like '我很好' (I'm fine) the 很 is almost a filler — not a strong 'very'. It's more a marker that lets an adjective serve as the predicate.
