大 (big) with an extra dot. It's 'big' plus a bit more — hence 'too' or 'very'. The added stroke signals excess.
It also means 'very' in a positive sense, as in '太好了' (great!). It marks 'Grand' in titles: 太阳 (tài yáng, 'great sun', the sun), 太后 (tài hòu, dowager empress).
